Get Published! Famous Or Not!

By: writingandblogging

Looking at some authors like Nelle Harper Lee who wrote the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” most people do not realize this was her one and only published book. J. D. Salinger of “Catcher in the Rye” fame, had this book as his only known, published work; Boris Pasternak the Nobel Prize winning author of “Doctor Zhivago”, also had this novel as his only known, published work. What theyhave in common is that they all had only one really big hit. Some of them produced other work that was less known to the public at large. It is said that everyone has at least one book in them.

Many writers pursue their fifteen minutes of fame and believe their only chance to achieve this type of recognition is to get a best selling book published through tradition publishers. Acknowledging your hard work as a published writer is a definite ego-boost.
Following are some of the unknown facts, when and if, a traditonal publisher decides to publish your work:

Some writers desire the advances and royalties

· Receiving royalties and advances that many writers desire from traditional publishers can motivate them to pursue publishing through a traditional method.

· Promoting and marketing a book when a writer receives a book deal from a traditional publisher also includes a “hidden cost.” Most writers are not aware of these costs.

· What’s little known about advances is that the cost for promoting and marketing your book through some, if not most, traditional publishers is included in (and deducted from) your advance. Also, at book signings, any costs of books that were not sold that the traditional publisher has provided or shipped for your signing event, are deducted from your royalties.

2. Other writers desire the perceived prestige that might accompany traditional publishers

· Desiring the perceived status or prestige a writer may feel when a traditional publisher offers a book deal is a validation many writers seek. Some feel that they have finally arrived and have a chance to become famous.

· What many don’t know is that even if a traditional publisher accepts you, it doesn’t mean that a traditional publisher will even publish your next book. Author Margaret Mitchell of “Gone with the Wind” fame only had one other book published, “Lost Laysen. That book was published posthumously. These days, it appears you have to be famous before a Traditional publisher is willing to take a chance and supply a writer with a deal and advance.

· Traditional publishers in today’s environment never publish a lot of good writing and really interesting work.

Go for it – Get Published!

People are spending less and less time reading physical books and spending more and more time online. When you self publish a book , use an online book service or have an online e-book, you can reach those that are already online. (See Part 1 for online publishers).. This leaves a path wide open for the writer and author to get past old stigmas about self publishing and go directly to the web.

As I mentioned in Not a Famous Author – Part 1, currently the self publishing and print on demand route to get a book published is growing at phenomenal speeds. This leaves a path wide open for the writer and author to get past old stigmas about self publishing. Writers and authors are creating a new path directly to the web where they are getting published in very large numbers.
