Find Out The Best Way To Load, Haul, And Secure Your ATV During Transport

By: Chris Station

Are you looking forward to doing some exploring in the great outdoors? Before you can do that you have to get your quad to the trail. And unless the trail is close by, your only option will be to load it up and haul it there.

There's a right way and a wrong way to load an ATV. Doing it right requires some know-how because if you don't take the proper safety precautions you may put yourself and your equipment at risk. Here's how to load and secure your quad on a pick-up truck or trailer.

If you are going to be loading your ATV onto a trailer, first, hitch the trailer to the vehicle doing the towing. Do this before you try to load so the trailer doesn't tip or rock.

Be sure to use ramps that have enough of a loading capacity to easily handle the combined weight of both the quad and any equipment that is mounted on it. Be sure to add in your weight if you are planning to ride your ATV up the ramp.

Riding a quad up a ramp is dangerous. Improper loading results in more accidents than you might expect. If you do have to ride your quad in order to load, at least wear protective gear like helmet, goggles, gloves, and boots.

When loading, use first gear if possible or the lowest gear that will work to get up the ramps. Try to avoid erratic starts and stops while you are on the ramps. Do not approach the ramps at high speeds. Doing so could cause the ramps to buckle or slam into the back of the truck or trailer.

The safest way to load up your quad is by using a winch. Doing this allows you to stand well clear of the quad. It also provides you with control of the speed and more precision in the loading.

Once your ATV is safely loaded, be sure to balance its weight over the pick-up or trailer axle, so the load is distributed evenly. Set the parking brake on the quad before securing it to the bed of your trailer or pick-up, using tie down straps.

Use two straps in front and two in back. Ratchet them down as tightly as you are able. You want the straps to lock the ATV in place so the tires appear to be under load.

Then take the time to loop and secure any excess strap lengths so they don't end up flapping or dragging. After that's all done you're ready to hit the road and head for your destination with your ATV.
