Anyone Can Grow Terrific Tomatoes!

By: Piper Cox

Who doesn’t like a tomato fresh from the garden? Grocery store tomatoes don't even start to measure up. Flawlessly ripened by the suns warm rays. No green tomatoes forced to ripen as they are taken off to the store. Only picked when they are ready to eat - delicious!

Anyone can grow the perfect tomato. It really isn’t hard at all. You just need a few pointers to begin. In no time you will have the ideal tomato garden just by following this simple idea

Where to Plant

You need to find the perfect location to plant your tomatoes. Tomatoes are sun lovers so a spot that gets plenty of sunlight is perfect. No matter if it is a sunny site in your garden, or a sunny corner of a patio – make sure your sun worshiping tomatoes get a lot of sunshine!

Tomatoes don't require a lot of space like other plants, but they will need about 18 inches for each plant. If you have a big garden, you can plant as many as your garden will support then sell them at a farmers market, or bottle them for later use. Tomatoes also do well in containers so if you have a small garden they will flourish in a small area. Plant them in a container that is well drained and gets lots of sun. Container grown tomatoes tend to fall over so add a small trellis or stake.

What Type of Tomato To Plant

It is remarkable how many different varieties of tomatoes there are available. It will be tough to decide which kind is the best to plant. If you are confused, pay a visit to your local nursery and ask what kinds do well in your area. You typically don't have to worry because most tomatoes grow well anywhere, but it is good to have a professional opinion. Think about planting a few cherry tomatoes as well. Cherry tomatoes are delicious for salads and just to eat fresh. Small tomatoes are ideal container plants and they also look great mixed in with your flowers. The little red fruit really looks beautiful planted along with marigolds. Planting marigolds around your tomatoes helps to keep pests away!

Where to Begin

You don’t want to put your tomatoes in the ground until the risk of frost has past. Once that threat has gone by, you can place tomato plants in the garden or containers. For the most part people buy tomato plants from a nursery, but you can start your plants indoors from seed. You will be further ahead on your tomato crop if you put plants in rather than seed directly into the garden. Starting seeds indoors will require you to begin six to eight weeks before it is time to plant them outside. Starting seeds indoors is simple. Simply fill a growing tray with a soil mixture made purposely for starting seeds and gently place the seeds into the soil. Keep the soil damp, but not waterlogged. You don't want to be able to see water standing in the soil, but if you press on it you will feel dampness. In a week or so you will see the seeds start to spring up. Make sure your little plants get plenty of light from a sunny window or a grow light. Once the plants are big enough and the threat of frost is over, plant them in your garden.

Watch for Pests!

Although tomatoes are very easy to grow, they do have their share of bug problems. The hornworm is one of the pests you will need to be concerned about. Since they go after the underside of the leaves, the only proof you will see is the droppings they leave on the lower leaves. If you find one, the ideal way to get rid of it is to squish it! Inspect your plants on a regular basis to make sure you don’t get infested with the hornworm.

Plants similar to marigolds and garlic can help to repel pests if you plant them close to your tomatoes. Possibly you have observed that people have one or two rows of marigolds in their gardens. That is because marigolds are a great organic pest repellant.

Growing the perfect tomato isn't difficult at all. A few simple steps and you are on your way to a yummy harvest!
